Weather Synopsis

Northwest flow aloft was in place today while a vigorous disturbance passed southeast across the area.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms moved NW-SE through parts of the Northland today, and a few of the storms were on the strong side earlier in the afternoon with gusty winds, lightning, a few reports of small hail and torrential downpours.  Skies were partly to mostly cloudy late this afternoon with a few lingering showers in far northeast Minnesota.  Highs today were in the 60s and 70s but cooled into the 50s for a brief time for areas that had rain.  Note:  Around 850 people were without power in the wake of today's storm in Saginaw, Hermantown and Duluth per Minnesota Power -- This outage lasted roughly two hours from ~1PM to ~3PM today.

Note:  The Duluth Airport picked up ~0.40" of rain with the early afternoon storms today.  International Falls ~0.25" of rain today.  Additional rainfall totals from today down below.

A few spotty showers will continue to drop south/southeast across parts of the area this evening then the rest of tonight will be dry with patchy fog possible under partly cloudy skies.  Lows will range from the 40s in the traditional cool spots across the Northland to the 50s elsewhere.

Saturday looks like a nice summer day with low humidity while highs range from the mid 70s to low 80s.  A mix of sun/clouds are expected with a few late day showers possible in far northern Minnesota but the majority of the Northland should stay dry Saturday.

A cold front approaches from the north Saturday evening through Sunday while an area of low pressure tracks southeast out of the northern Plains -- The combination of these two features will cause showers and a few thunderstorms Sunday especially over western-southern sections of the Northland the way it looks now.  Highs Sunday are forecast to be in the 60s and 70s although it may be a little warmer if there's more sun and less rain.
