Weather Synopsis for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

A much needed widespread rainfall event affected the Northland today thanks to a strong low pressure system which as of 4 PM today was centered near Duluth, Minnesota.  Good jet dynamics accompanied this system today which helped to generate this precipitation.  There was enough cold air in place particularly in far northern Minnesota to produce a wintry mix of precipitation today with a report of 0.20" of ice accumulation near Finland, Minnesota with the ice accumulating only on trees in higher elevation.  Due to the extensive clouds and precipitation today, temperatures only made it to the mid 30s to mid 40s along and north of Highway 2 in northeast Minnesota with milder temperatures in the low/mid 50s in east central Minnesota and most of northwest Wisconsin.

Low pressure near Duluth late this afternoon will move into eastern Ontario Province by Wednesday morning -- Patchy drizzle, fog and a few light showers will persist in parts of the area this evening otherwise mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies are on tap for tonight with lows in the 30s but some locations in far northern Minnesota could dip into the 20s.

Wednesday will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies with increasing winds out of the east near Lake Superior which will limit high temps to the upper 30s and low 40s adjacent to Lake Superior while inland locations warm into the 40s and 50s.  High pressure will pass by to the north of Minnesota while low pressure organizes over the western High Plains -- That area of low pressure is forecast to track toward the E/NE moving into southern Wisconsin Thursday morning, then toward northern Lower Michigan by Thursday afternoon.  This system could bring some more precipitation to portions of the Northland from late Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, right now it looks like east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin stand the best chance for this precipitation with lesser chances for northern Minnesota.  Note:  There is a chance for the rain to mix with or change to snow/sleet in parts of the Northland on Thursday with light accumulations of snow or sleet possible.

Forecast for Duluth and Superior

.Tonight...  Considerable cloudiness.  Areas of fog.  Drizzle possible this evening.  Low 34 to 38.  Wind becoming northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

.Wednesday...  Partly to mostly cloudy.  Becoming breezy.  High 41 to 46.  Wind shifting to the east to northeast at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts developing during the afternoon.
