Note:  This month has been a chilly one (so far) in the Twin Ports.  The average temperature through March 13th:  18.3 degrees which is -4.1 degrees below normal.  Overall it's looking like most of the rest of this month will be cooler than normal, although some brief warm ups are likely but the chances of them sticking around very long look pretty slim -- I think there is a decent chance that March 2017 will be a below average temperature month, if it is it will be the first below average temperature month since April 2016 (About a year ago!)

*A few more temperature stats -- The last time Duluth had back to back below average temperature months was March-April 2014!  Yes you have to go back 3 years to find consecutive below average temperature months at Duluth, Minnesota.

*4 subzero nights so far this month at Duluth; The average for an entire March is 3.  Last March only had one subzero night.

Weather Synopsis for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Strong high pressure of 1034mb was over the southwest half of Minnesota this afternoon.  Mainly sunny skies across the Northland today although some lake effect clouds and flurries have been affecting portions of the South Shore.  Below normal highs once again today with readings in the 20s with a few spots close to or at 30 degrees at 4 PM.

Quiet weather will continue in our area through Wednesday under mainly clear skies.  Another chilly one tonight with the high overhead, clear skies and nearly calm winds.  Lows will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero.  Highs Wednesday in the 30s so finally back to normal, perhaps even a degree or two above normal.

Thursday afternoon through Friday could turn a little unsettled/sloppy as low pressure and cold front pass through the region.  This system is expected to bring some rain, wet snow, sleet and perhaps some patchy freezing rain to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with minor ice accumulations and a few inches of slushy snowfall possible in parts of the area.
