August 4, 2016: 70-80 mph winds, downed trees and power outages reported in the Brainerd Lakes area early this morning

/Issued 4:04 AM CDT, Thursday, August 4, 2016/

Here we go again.  Another round of severe thunderstorms producing damaging wind gusts of 70-80 mph plowed through the Brainerd Lakes area early Thursday morning - Link below is the Minnesota Power outage map.  As of about 3:30 AM; Over 3,000 customers were without power in the Brainerd Lakes area.

A complex of rain and thunderstorms continues to move east and east-southeast across northern and central Minnesota early this morning (3 AM) Heavy rain and frequent lightning have been the main hazards out of these storms but a few of the storms have turned severe with damaging winds mainly around the Brainerd Lakes area.

Should see this area of showers and thunderstorms move into northeast and eastern Minnesota and into northwest Wisconsin during the next few hours.  The airmass out ahead of this activity consists of CAPE of 500-1000 j/kg with steep mid level lapse rates over 7.5 c/km.  A strong low level jet out of the southwest at 40-50 knots continues to pump deep moisture into the Northland with dew points of around 70 degrees with PWATS exceeding 1.50" so locally heavy rainfall is a distinct possibility during the next few hours.
