A classic spring pattern. Unseasonably warm temperatures away from Lake Superior today with highs topping out in the 60s and 70s with near 80 degree temperatures from Longville and Brainerd east to Aitkin. Near Lake Superior a whole different story as the cold dense air over the lake resulted in a lake breeze keeping daytime highs in the 40s today. Sky conditions ranged from sunny or mostly sunny in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin to partly sunny to mostly cloudy over northern Minnesota. Winds today were out of the south at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts, east winds near Lake Superior.

Short Term Forecast - Confidence: High.
Tonight (April 14)
A warm front will lift slowly north through the Northland. The atmosphere is becoming a little unstable this afternoon near this warm frontal boundary with elevated CAPE at around 250 j/kg with lifted indices of 0 to -3 C -- Steep mid level lapse rates of 7.0-7.5 c/km are also in place in western-northern parts of the area. There could be a few showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm tonight mainly in northern Minnesota, dry elsewhere. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected with lows in the 40s with 30s near Lake Superior. Winds will be out of the south or east at 10 to 20 mph.
Friday and Friday night (April 15)
A cold front will settle into the Red River Valley of northwest Minnesota while a mild/southerly flow persists ahead of this front. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will continue on Friday. Scattered showers are possible mainly in western-northern sections of the Northland. Highs will be in 60s and 70s with 40s near Lake Superior. Lows Friday night will be in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of the south or southeast at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday through Monday (April 16-18)
Scattered showers are possible at times on Saturday and Sunday as a cold front moves slowly south/east out of western Minnesota. Highs on Saturday will be in the 60s and 70s with 40s near Lake Superior. Lows Saturday night will range from the 30s in northern Minnesota to the 40s and 50s in eastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Highs on Sunday will range from the 30s and 40s in northern Minnesota with 50s and 60s over northwest Wisconsin, lows Sunday night will be in the 30s.
Dry weather is expected on Monday with highs in the 40s and 50s.
