March 5, 2015 Weather Report - Parts of the Northland close to 40 below zero This Morning; Milder days ahead; 50s early next week?

Get ready!  A significant warm-up is coming.  Temperatures will turn milder the next few days, but the real warming should take place next week with the Monday-Wednesday time frame looking real nice at the moment.  The map below is valid for Tuesday, March 10, 2015 per 12z EUROPEAN model.  This map shows the 850mb temperatures for next Tuesday, and what we should see here at the surface.  All the real cold air finally pulls into Eastern Canada while a milder/Pacific flow sets up over the Upper Midwest.  Source,

Weather Summary for March 5, 2015
Location:  Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

High pressure of 1036mb was centered over Eastern Iowa as of 4 PM Today.  Sunshine ruled over the Northland Today with highs in the teens -- warmer than Wednesday, but still a good 10-15 degrees below average for early March.  Winds Today were out of the southwest at 10 to around 20 mph.

Short Term Forecast - Confidence:  High.

Tonight (March 5)

High pressure moves into the Ohio Valley while a warm front sets up to our west/south.  Clear to partly cloudy skies will be found across the area Tonight with lows in the single digits below to single digits above zero, some teens below are possible in the traditional cold spots.  Winds will be out of the southwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Friday and Friday Night (March 6)

A weak clipper system moves through the Northland during this period.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast and there could be a few snow showers and flurries at times.  Highs on Friday will mainly be in the 20s with lows Friday Night in the teens and 20s.  Winds will generally be out of the south or west at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast - Confidence:  High.

Saturday through Monday (March 7-9)

A couple more areas of low pressure will traverse the region this weekend/early next week.  A few snow showers or flurries are possible at times Saturday and Sunday with mainly dry weather expected for Monday.  Note:  Some parts of the Northland could pick up an inch or less of snow accumulation between Friday Night-Sunday but that should be about it.  

The bigger story will be the temperatures as we see a milder pattern set in (Finally)  High temperatures are forecast to be in the 20s and 30s Saturday and Sunday and in the 30s and 40s on Monday.  Lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night will be in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast - Confidence:  High.

(March 10-15)

No major storms from the 10th-15th.  A big time thaw is expected next week, and we should see a lot of snow melt occur by next weekend.  Daytime highs could soar well into the 40s, maybe even into the 50s in parts of the area next Tuesday/Wednesday (10th-11th) 

It looks like will have an east wind near Lake Superior especially during the Thursday-Saturday time frame (12th-14th) so temperatures will likely be quite a bit cooler near the lake later next week if this east wind does develop.
