Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
An area of showers and thunderstorms tracked through portions of the area during the Morning, behind this area of precip skies were partly sunny to mostly cloudy with highs in the 70s and 80s but cooler 40s and 50s prevailed around the head of Lake Superior. Dewpoints Today were in the 60s to around 70 degrees with PWS nearing 1.50" and 850mb td's of +10 to +16 degrees C. A cold front was moving slowly east out of Westcentral Minnesota This Afternoon with only a few showers and isolated thunderstorms forming at times out ahead of this front.
The risk for severe thunderstorms continues for Northern-Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin, but so far the cap or layer of warm air aloft has been hanging on strong with late Afternoon 700mb temperatures of +10 to +14 degrees C, the computer models continue to show this layer of warm air aloft weakening a tad through 7 PM, and if this does occur...Then there will likely be scattered severe thunderstorms especially from Eastcentral Minnesota to Northcentral Wisconsin. There is plenty of instability and shear for a thunderstorm to tap into, the negatives are the cap and the main energy/surface low passing well to our northwest. If severe thunderstorms develop, the risk for large hail and damaging winds will occur with an isolated tornado risk also possible through 8 PM mainly for Northwestern Wisconsin.
The cold front which may trigger the storms This Evening will exit to our south and east. Skies will become partly cloudy with lows in the 40s and 50s. Winds will shift to the west or southwest at 10 to 20 mph.
Saturday and Saturday Night:
High pressure builds into the Upper Midwest behind Tonight's cold front. Partly cloudy skies are forecast during this period with highs Tomorrow mainly in the 70s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of west at 10-20 mph.
A few showers or thunderstorms can't be ruled out Sunday through Monday, June 5th-6th as a weak boundary stalls out across the Upper Midwest. High temperatures will be mainly in the 70s for Sunday and Monday with lows in the 40s and 50s.
