Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

High pressure of 1016mb covered the Upper Midwest with Friday's system now off to our east.  Pockets of light rain and drizzle did occur at times Today in the Arrowhead of Minnesota, otherwise skies were partly to mostly cloudy Today.  Highs were in the upper 50s in Downtown Duluth with widespread 60s elsewhere with even a 70 degree temperature reported at International Falls and Brainerd, Minnesota late This Afternoon.  Winds Today were variable in direction under 15 mph.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

500mb low and upper level trough was moving east across the Upper Great Lakes and Ontario Province per water vapor satellite imagery.  Behind this system a west-southwest H5 flow was occurring as the next upper level trough digs southeast from the Pacific Northwest.

Tonight:

High pressure will cover the Upper Midwest with clear to partly cloudy skies found in our area.  Lows will mainly be in the 40s, but some 30s are possible in the traditional cold spots and a patch or two of frost is even possible Overnight in Northeast Minnesota, away from Lake Superior.  Winds Tonight will be variable in direction at 12 mph or less.

Sunday and Sunday Night:

Area of high pressure will exit to our north/east during this period.  Partly cloudy to sunny skies are expected on Sunday with highs in the 60s and 70s.  Sunday Night will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies with lows in the 40s to lower 50s.  South or east winds are forecast under 15 mph.

Extended Forecast:

A stationary front will extend from the Western High Plains toward the Central Plains region while a couple systems pass through the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.  The best combination of warm air, instability, and moisture is forecast to remain well to our west-south for next week and this should preclude any vigorous thunderstorm development in Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Our local area can expect to see some rain showers from time to time from next Monday through Thursday, June 13th-16th with perhaps an isolated thunderstorm during the Afternoon or Evening hours.  High temperatures for Monday and Tuesday will be in the 60s and 70s with 50s near Lake Superior.  Lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night will be in the 40s and 50s.
