Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

The biggest change compared to yesterday was that the easterly wind picked up once again near Lake Superior with gusts up to 20 mph, otherwise Today was quite similar to the past two days with lots of sunshine along with highs in the middle 60s to lower 70s away from Lake Superior with 50s to lower 60s found closer to the lake.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

500mb pattern is all out of whack.  System out east is pushing toward the west with a rather healthy but moisture starved disturbance shifting west-southwest out of Wisconsin late Today per water vapor satellite imagery.  Large upper level troughs covered the Eastern and Western U.S. Today while an upper level ridge covers parts of Central Canada, south through the Upper Midwest and Central Plains.  Note:  High temperatures were just as warm if not slightly warmer in Eastern Manitoba and Western Ontario Province (mid 70s to low 80s) compared to Western Kansas Today (mainly 70s)

Clear skies will continue for our area with lows in the 30s and lower 40s, but some 20s will likely occur in the typical cold spots.  Patchy frost could also develop once again Overnight.  Winds will be out of the east under 20 mph.

Wednesday and Wednesday Night:

Some slight changes take place during this period with a bit more cloud-cover expected compared to previous days, but no rain is anticipated.  Partly to mostly sunny skies are forecast Tomorrow with highs in the 60s and 70s, but it will be cooler near Lake Superior.  Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the 30s and 40s with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Winds will be out of the east at 10-20 mph.

Extended Forecast:

Thursday and Thursday Night, May 19th will feature a risk for some showers, mainly in Northern Minnesota, the rest of our area should stay dry.  Highs will be in the 60s and 70s, cooler near Lake Superior.  Lows Thursday Night will mainly be in the 40s.

Friday and Friday Night, May 20th:  A few showers are possible, mainly in western and southern areas during this period.  Low pressure and an upper level trough currently over the Western U.S. will head into the Northern and Central Plains by Friday with southerly winds becoming established out ahead of this system.  Moisture will be on the increase with 850mb td's climbing to around +8 degrees C, PWS nearing 1.00", with dewpoints rising into the 50s for areas away from Lake Superior.  High temperatures on Friday will be in the 50s and 60s, maybe a few 70s in Northern Minnesota.  Lows Friday Night will be in the 40s and 50s.

Still looks like our best shot for some rain will come this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 21st-22nd.  This rain will occur due to a slow moving surface low and 500mb trough which will move across the Upper Midwest this weekend.  Isolated thunderstorms are possible as well for both Saturday and Sunday, but severe weather is not expected at this time.
