Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

Abundant sunshine was found in our area for the second day in a row.  Winds were also much lighter compared to this past weekend.  High temperatures were in the 60s to lower 70s except for locations near Lake Superior where highs stayed in the 50s.  Winds Today were east or northeast under 15 mph.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

Large 500mb troughs were in place over the Eastern U.S. and Western U.S. with an upper level ridge in portions of Northern and Central Plains per water vapor satellite imagery and RUC model analysis.  The system out east is moving nowhere while the system out west is progressing toward the east, but as it moves farther east it will be running into the 500mb ridge, which will slow the system down.

Tonight through Tuesday Night:

Clear to partly cloudy skies with cool nights and a mild Tuesday are on tap across our area as high pressure remains over the Upper Midwest.  Lows Tonight and Tuesday Night will be in the 30s to around 40 degrees with some 20s in the traditional cold spots.  Highs Tomorrow will be in the 40s and 50s near Lake Superior with 60s and 70s elsewhere.  Winds during this period will be out of the east under 20 mph.  Note:  There is a potential for patchy frost late Tonight and again Tuesday Night for Northwest Wisconsin and Eastcentral and Northcentral Minnesota.

Extended Forecast:

Dry conditions should continue Wednesday and Wednesday Night with highs in the 60s and 70s, but it will be cooler near Lake Superior.  Lows Wednesday Night will be in the 30s and 40s.  Slight chances for showers move into the area for Thursday and Friday, May 19th-20th as low pressure heads slowly N-NE out of the Rockies while an upper level low pushes west out of the Eastern U.S.  The potential for rain will increase this weekend, May 21st-22nd as that Rocky Mountain system heads toward the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.  Isolated thunderstorms are possible as well for Saturday and Sunday, but right now there doesn't appear to be much of a severe weather threat for this area.  High temperatures on Friday will mainly be in the 60s, but cooler temperatures will persist near Lake Superior.  Lows Friday Night will be in the 40s to lower 50s.
