Issued at 3:35 PM CDT, Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

Temperatures have taken a nose dive compared to the past few days as strong high pressure >1030mb in Ontario Province Canada funnels a dry/chilly airmass into our area along with a brisk  E-NE wind near Lake Superior, wind speeds Today ranged from 5-15 mph, but higher gusts over 30 mph have been occurring near Lake Superior.  Highs Today were in the 30s and 40s with the coldest temps near Lake Superior.

Tonight:

Strong low pressure will remain over Central-Eastern Kansas with high pressure off to our north.  Expect partly-mostly cloudy skies in our area Tonight with easterly winds at 10-20 mph, but gusts over 30 mph will persist near Lake Superior.  Lows Tonight will be in the 20s to around 30 degrees with some teens possible in Northern Minnesota.

Friday and Friday Night:

Low pressure will deepen from 998mb to around 993mb as it tracks from Eastern Kansas Friday Morning to Westcentral Illinois by late Friday Night.  Gusty E-NE winds will persist during this period thanks to a tight pressure gradient between high pressure to our north and low pressure to our south.  Wind speeds of 15-25 mph will be common throughout our area with gusts nearing 40 mph, mainly near Lake Superior.  Partly sunny-mostly cloudy skies on Friday will turn mainly cloudy Friday Night.  Most of Tomorrow should be dry, but a few rain showers can't be ruled out toward the Cass Lake, Walker, and Brainerd areas.  The threat for snow will increase Friday Night with some rain mixing in with the snow Friday Evening.  At this time it appears that most of the precipitation will remain south of a Bigfork to Ely, Minnesota line based on latest model data.  Highs Tomorrow will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Friday Night in the 20s to lower 30s.

Extrended Forecast:

Potent area of low pressure of 983-988mb will lift N-NE through the Central Great Lakes to Eastern Ontario Province Canada this weekend.  Snow or a mix of rain and snow will continue on Saturday behind this low in Northwest Wisconsin and Northeast-Eastern Minnesota.  Highs will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Saturday Night mainly in the 20s, dry weather should return to the area Saturday Night.  Sunday and Sunday Night are also looking mainly dry at this time with highs mainly in the 40s on Sunday with lows Sunday Night in the 20s to around 30 degrees.

Note:  Total snowfall accumulations of 1-3" are possible from Friday Night into Saturday for Northwest Wisconsin, to Northeast and Eastern Minnesota.

The potential for some more rain or snow returns to the area between Monday-Wednesday of next week,  but there are differences in the computer models on the timing and track of this next system for early next week.
