Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

Indian Summer is in full swing.  High pressure of 1031 mb was centered near Madison, Wisconsin as of 1 PM with a southerly wind and nothing but sunshine occurring across our local area Today.  High temperatures were generally in the 60s which is about 5-10 degrees above average for early October.  A very dry airmass also continued Today with dewpoints This Afternoon mainly in the 30s with PWS of just 0.30-0.40"!  Winds Today were out of the south or southwest at 10-20 mph.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

500 mb lows covered the Ohio Valley and Central California per water vapor satellite imagery.  Upper level troughs were found over portions of the Western U.S. and the Eastern U.S. while an upper level ridge covered the Northern/Central Plains Today per RUC model analysis.  It's a very blocky/slow moving weather pattern, something that has been rare in 2010.

Tonight through Tuesday Night:

Strong high pressure will remain to our southeast through this period while low pressure passes by well to our northwest-north Tuesday Night.  A cold front attached to that low will move east and pass through Northern-Eastern Minnesota by late Tuesday Night.  Clear skies are expected Tonight with lows in the 30s and 40s.  Partly cloudy-sunny skies are on tap for Tuesday with highs generally in the 60s to around 70 degrees, but it could be cooler closer to Lake Superior as surface winds could back more to the southeast on Tuesday.  Partly-mostly cloudy skies are forecast Tomorrow Night with lows generally in the 40s.  The greatest risk for showers with this approaching cold front should remain north of the border, closer to where the better dynamics will be found.  Winds Tonight through Tomorrow Night will be out of the south at 5-15 mph with higher gusts on Tuesday, winds will begin to shift to the west by Tuesday Night once the cold front passes through.

Extended Forecast:

Dry weather should continue for our local area from Wednesday into Friday.  High pressure will build back into the Plains/Upper Midwest behind Tuesday Night's/Wednesday cold frontal passage.  High temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s on Wednesday with mainly 60s for Thursday.  Lows will be mainly in the 40s both Wednesday and Thursday Night.
