Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Low pressure of 1005 mb was centered near Madison Wisconsin (Southern part of the state) late Today while high pressure of 1010 mb heads east through the Dakotas. Most of our area was dry Today under partly-mostly cloudy skies, but there were some showers at times in far Southeast areas...Mainly affecting Price County WI. High temperatures Today were in the middle 60s to around 70 degrees with 50s to around 60 degrees common around the head of Lake Superior. 850 mb temperatures as of 4 PM ranged from +8/+9 degrees C. Winds Today were variable or easterly in direction under 15 mph.
Today's 500 mb analysis:
A near zonal flow (west-east) continued across the region Today with a large upper level low nearly stationary in the Gulf of Alaska while an unusually strong (for the time of year) jet stream blasts east from the Central Pacific Ocean.
Partly-mostly cloudy skies will be found across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin Tonight as high pressure moves east out of the Northern Plains. Lows Tonight will be in the 40s to around 50 degrees, but more 30s can be expected in the typical cold spots. Winds will be variable Tonight under 12 mph.
Thursday and Thursday Night:
Area of high pressure slides off to our east making way for a new low pressure system which will track east through the Northern Rockies/Northern Plains. Mostly sunny-partly cloudy skies are forecast across our area on Thursday with highs in the 60s and 70s along with south, west, or east winds under 15 mph. Partly-mostly cloudy skies can be expected for Thursday Night with the threat for showers or thunderstorms overspreading the entire area from west to east later in the night. Lows Thursday Night will be in the 40s and 50s with south or east winds under 15 mph.
The upper level pattern will change little through the weekend and possibly beyond. A couple more disturbances will likely track east from the Western U.S. through the Upper Midwest as a very strong 100+ knot upper level jet remains over the Central Pacific/Northwest U.S through the weekend.
Showers or thunderstorms will be possible across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin from Friday through Sunday, although there will likely be some dry hours mixed in as well during all three of those days.
High temperatures for Friday and Saturday will be mainly in the 60s, but a few 70s can't be ruled out in some locales. Lows Friday Night and Saturday Night will be in the 40s and 50s.
