6/17/10: SEVERE WEATHER/CHASE PLANS

Issued at 9:52 AM CDT, Thursday, June 17th, 2010

...MODERATE RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS...FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING FOR SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF OUR LOCAL AREA...INCLUDING CROW WING COUNTY MN...AITKIN COUNTY MN...PINE COUNTY MN...BURNETT COUNTY WI...AND WASHBURN COUNTY WI...

...SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS...FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING FOR THE REMAINDER OF OUR LOCAL AREA...

I will not be issuing a weather-blog Today as I will be leaving Duluth, MN around 12 PM Today to chase this severe weather event. My current plan is to head to Brainerd Minnesota, but I will most likely be dropping a tad more to the southwest, down toward the Alexandria Minnesota area.

People across Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin should be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions the rest of Today and This Evening. A NOAA weather radio is your best source for up to the minute weather information. Severe thunderstorm and or tornado watches/warnings could be issued at some-point for portions of our area later Today and This Evening.

The main threats out of these storms will be large hail and damaging winds along with heavy downpours and dangerous lightning. There is also an isolated tornado risk between 4PM-8PM in Southwestern areas...Mainly affecting Crow Wing County, and possibly Southern Aitkin County MN. The risk for tornadoes will extend farther southwest into Westcentral, Southern, and Central Minnesota as well, this would include the Interstate 94 corridor in Central Minnesota.

Stay safe everyone!
