Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Another cool/gray day across our area with plenty of low level moisture in place with Afternoon PWS ranging from 1.10"-1.40" with 850 mb td's of +9/+12 degrees C per SPC Meso-Analysis. High temperatures Today were in the middle 50s to lower 60s which is running about 5-10 degrees below normal for this time of year. 850 mb temperatures as of 3 PM ranged from +9/+15 degrees C in Northern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. A warm front continued to sit well to our south Today (Northern Iowa) while another disturbance moved northeast into Minnesota along with a surface trough which was approaching Western Minnesota late Today. The combination of these features has allowed for the development of another area of rain which has been pushing E/NE through portions of Western, Central, and Southern Minnesota Today. Winds Today were out of the north or east under 20 mph.
Today's 500 mb analysis:
Upper level low (570 meters) covered Western Arizona late Today per water vapor satellite imagery and RUC model analysis. A southwest flow aloft continued Today over the Upper Midwest out ahead of this upper low/upper trough out west. An upper level ridge (594 meters) covered most of the Southern-Southeast U.S. Today. Strong jet stream winds continued once again Today with two pockets of strong winds aloft...One area extended from Central Manitoba Province through Central Ontario Province into Central Quebec Province (100-130 knots), the other area was located over Eastern Arizona-Western New Mexico (100 knots).
An upper level disturbance will continue to track E-NE through Minnesota, this system combined with plenty of low level moisture in place will go on to produce some light rain and drizzle across all of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin This Evening with the threat for light rain ending from west to east by late Tonight. Rainfall totals should generally be around one tenth of an inch Tonight with isolated areas possibly picking up as much as one quarter inch of rain. Mostly cloudy skies are expected across our area Tonight with areas of fog which could be especially dense near Lake Superior. Lows will be in the 40s and 50s Tonight with winds out of the north or east under 20 mph.
Sunday and Sunday Night:
There will still be a risk for a few showers around our area on Sunday, although the coverage of rain should be much less compared to what we have seen the past two days. Partly sunny-mostly cloudy skies are expected on Sunday with highs mainly in the 60s, but a few locales could reach 70 degrees. Partly-mostly cloudy skies are forecast Sunday Night with lows in the 40s and 50s. Areas of fog are possible Tomorrow Morning and possibly again late Tomorrow Night. Winds during this period will be out of of the north, west, or east under 20 mph.
An upper level low is forecast to drop south-southeast out of Manitoba Province and will reach the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest next Monday-Tuesday. This system will likely bring some more rain to most of our area early next week. High temperatures Monday and Tuesday will be in the 50s and 60s with lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night in the 40s and 50s.
The next threat for showers or thunderstorms will occur late next week as an area of low pressure passes northeast through the Northern Plains and drags a warm front and cold front through the Upper Midwest. Timing of this system is subject to change in coming days, but right now it appears that it would pass through our local area during the Thursday Night-Friday Morning time frame.
