Weather Synopsis for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Cold temperatures but generally sunny skies continued today with highs in the teens.  Surface map at 3 PM had high pressure of 1030mb over southeastern Missouri with low pressure of 990mb in southern Alberta.

Clouds will be on the increase over the Northland tonight as the low over southern Alberta heads toward the Manitoba/North Dakota border by daybreak -- A warm front attached to the surface low will move east into western Minnesota by early Friday morning.

Strong warm air advection will be occurring ahead of this system tonight with 850mb temperatures of -10 to -16 C late this afternoon climbing to around +6 C in western parts of the Northland to around -10 C in extreme northeast Minnesota by daybreak.

Temperatures will bottom out in the single digits below to single digits above zero this evening with rising temperatures into the teens to around 20 degrees after midnight.

There should be some snow or possibly a mixture of wintry precipitation pushing through parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from later this evening into Friday morning as the warmer air moves in.  Snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible in extreme northern into extreme northeast Minnesota while snowfall of less than 1 inch occurs farther south.  Any ice accumulations should be minor but may still be enough to cause some scattered slippery spots on area roads Friday morning.

The Northland will be in the warm sector Friday afternoon with low pressure scooting along the Ontario/Minnesota border while the warm front lifts northeast out of the area with the cold front then pushing southeast through the area Friday night.

Gusty west-southwest winds will occur on Friday afternoon with gusts of 20 to 30 mph possible.  850mb temperatures will peak in the +3 to +8 C range while daytime highs climb into the 30s with 40s possible over western-southern portions of the area.
