Weather Summary for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
Date:  September 23, 2016

Clouds have slowly been increasing across the Northland today as low pressure tracks toward the western High Plains - A warm front attached to this low extends from southern South Dakota to north central Iowa.  Temperatures near and south of this front were in the 80s and 90s today but it was much cooler but pretty much near normal temperatures over our area with highs mainly in the 60s.  There is a pretty big contrast in the amount of moisture over Minnesota today with PWATS at 4 PM ranging from around 0.50" in the Arrowhead of Minnesota to 1.80" across western and south central Minnesota.

.Short Term Forecast...

Tonight (September 23)

Mostly cloudy with some rain tonight.  The rain will spread SW-NE across the Northland with mostly light rainfall amounts expected in most areas.  Could also be some drizzle and fog later in the night.  Low temperatures will be in the 50s with 40s possible in far northeast Minnesota.  Winds out of the east or southeast at 5 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph continuing near Lake Superior.

Saturday (September 24)

Drizzle and possibly some fog could linger most of Saturday around Lake Superior - Elsewhere expect generally mostly cloudy skies with increasing chances for rain over the entire Northland Saturday night with the rain tracking SW-NE or N-NE into our area.  Highs on Saturday will be in the 60s to lower 70s with 50s near Lake Superior.  Lows Saturday night in the 50s and 60s.  Winds remain out of the east or southeast at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.

Note:  A strong area of low pressure is forecast to lift out of the western High Plains moving into western-northern North Dakota between tonight and Saturday night while high pressure remains centered northeast of Lake Superior through Saturday night.  A warm front and cold front attached to the area of low pressure will finally move into the Northland Saturday night.

Sunday (September 25)

Areas of rain during the morning followed by a bit of a break before more rain showers move in or develop in parts of the Northland by the afternoon-evening hours.  Mostly cloudy skies but a period of clearing will probably occur as a dry slot passes through the area.  Highs on Sunday will be in the 50s and 60s with lows Sunday night in the 40s and 50s.

Monday (September 26)

Low pressure at the surface and aloft along with a strong upper level trough will affect our weather on Monday resulting in mostly cloudy skies with some rain.  Highs on Monday will mainly be in the 50s with 40s possible in far northeast Minnesota.

There will be a pretty good shot of cold air advection in wake of this system with 850mb temperatures of +12 to +16 C on Saturday dropping +5 to +10 C by Sunday evening and to around +2 to +4 C by Monday morning.

Note:  Looks like it could turn windy once again Sunday afternoon into Monday but this time the wind direction will be out of the west or northwest instead of the east wind we've been dealing with during the last few days.  Wind gusts could exceed 25-30 mph over parts of the Northland from Sunday PM into Monday.

.Tonight...  Breezy.  Mostly cloudy.  Light rain gradually developing this evening.  Areas of drizzle and fog possible after midnight.  Low 51 to 56.  Wind east at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

.Saturday...  Breezy.  Drizzle and areas of fog possible.  Mostly cloudy.  High 56 to 61.  Wind east at 15 to 25 mph.

Drizzle and fog continues Saturday night with rain developing toward midnight.

Light rain is possible Sunday morning - Followed by partial clearing with highs in the 60s.

Gusty west winds, cooler temperatures, more clouds and some rain returns Sunday evening through Monday.
