A cool late summer day with high temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s under a good deal of clouds although there has been some sunshine at times, and there's also been a few spotty showers today in northeast Minnesota.  Strong high pressure of 1026mb was over the northern Plains this afternoon with a cool N-NW wind at 10 to 20 mph occurring to the east of that high.

Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

...Short Term Forecast...

Tonight (September 13)

The big story tonight will be the development of frost which should occur after midnight especially over north central and east central Minnesota.  Patchy frost can't be ruled out as far east as Duluth (On top of the hill) Frost is not expected though for locations near Lake Superior and also over most of northwest Wisconsin tonight.

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies this evening should become mostly clear late in the night as high pressure heads into the Upper Midwest.  Lows will be in the 30s and 40s.  Winds tonight will be out of the north or west at 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday (September 14)

Clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast on Wednesday with high pressure over the Upper Midwest but exiting to the east later in the day.  Highs will mainly be in the low to mid 60s with lows generally in the 40s although 30s are possible in the Arrowhead of Minnesota and over interior portions of northwest Wisconsin.  Variable wind direction tomorrow shifting to the south tomorrow night.

...Extended Forecast...

Thursday and Friday (September 15-16)

An area of low pressure along with an upper level trough is forecast to move east/northeast out of the northern Plains and through the Upper Midwest/western Great Lakes later this week -- This system should bring some rain to the Northland beginning Thursday evening and continuing at times through Friday night.

High temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to be in the 60s to around 70 degrees with lows Thursday night in the 50s to lower 60s.

For this weekend, it looks like Sunday will be the better weather day, that's when high temperatures should get back into the 70s over most of the Northland with a west-southwest wind.
