A cool and blustery day. Low pressure of 1004mb was over eastern Ontario Province with high pressure of 1026mb covering Manitoba Province and North Dakota, a chilly northerly flow occurred in the Upper Midwest today behind the surface low and ahead of the area of high pressure. Late afternoon 500mb temperatures were down around -32 C with 850mb temperatures of -10 to -12 C. Partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies covered the Northland today with some flurries at times. Highs today were mainly in the 30s with a northwest wind at 15 to 30 mph with higher gusts.
Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast - Confidence: Medium to High.
Tonight (April 11)
Clear to partly cloudy as high pressure builds southeast into the Upper Midwest. Lows will be in the teens and 20s with single digits in the typical cold spots. Winds will be out of the west or northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts lingering through the evening hours.
Tuesday and Tuesday night (April 12)
Dry tomorrow under partly to mostly cloudy skies, high pressure moves off to the east while southerly winds develop on the backside of that high which will result in a warm advection pattern -- Some wet snow and rain could move through parts of the area from late Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night with up to 1" of slushy snow accumulation possible where-ever the main snow band decides to set up which is uncertain at the moment.
Highs on Tuesday will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Tuesday night in the 30s with 20s in far northeast Minnesota. South winds tomorrow at 10 to 15 mph with south or east winds at 10 to 20 mph tomorrow night.
Extended Forecast - Confidence: High.
Wednesday through Friday (April 13-15)
Dry with warmer temperatures except near Lake Superior. An upper level area of high pressure with building 500mb heights will setup over the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest from mid to late week which will lead to generally dry weather for our area.
High temperatures on Wednesday are expected to be in the 50s and 60s with 60s and even some 70s possible for Thursday and Friday. A pesky east wind will keep it much cooler though near Lake Superior through the end of the week. Low temperatures Wednesday night and Thursday night will be in the 30s and 40s.
Long Range Forecast - Confidence: Medium to High.
There's a chance for some rain showers on the 17th-18th otherwise the long range is shaping up to be pretty uneventful here in the Northland. Above average temperatures should continue from the 16th-21st but expect cooler temperatures at times near Lake Superior (Typical for spring)
