Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Date: March 21, 2016
Temperatures weren't bad today but cloud cover was more widespread than it was on Sunday. Highs today were in the 30s and 40s as winds swung around to an easterly direction at around 5-15 mph. Surface map late this afternoon had high pressure of 1020mb over Manitoba Province with low pressure of 1002mb covering the Northern Rockies.
Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast - Confidence: High.
Tonight (March 21)
A frontal boundary pushes south into Southern Minnesota tonight while low pressure tracks east-southeast out of the Northern Rockies. Should be able to squeeze out some light snow or mixed precipitation in parts of the Northland tonight but this doesn't look like a real big deal but still use caution if you have travel plans later tonight or Tuesday morning as a few spots could pick up around 1" or 2" of slushy snow later in the night especially along and north of Highway 2. Low temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s with east or northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.
Tuesday and Tuesday night (March 22)
High pressure will be centered to our north while low pressure develops in the Central Plains. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast on Tuesday with a chance for a few snow or rain showers. Highs will be in the 30s to around 40 with lows Tuesday night in the teens and 20s. East or northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph near Lake Superior.
Extended Forecast - Confidence: Medium to High.
Wednesday through Friday (March 23-25)
High pressure over Ontario Province will control our weather for Wednesday and Thursday while low pressure moves east/northeast out of the Central Plains to the Southern Great Lakes/Ohio Valley. Significant amounts of snow, rain and gusty winds will accompany that storm but none of this is expected to reach into the Northland the way it looks now. Highs on Wednesday and Thursday will mainly be in the 30s with 20s closer to Lake Superior, lows Wednesday night and Thursday night will be in the teens and 20s.
A new weather system could move into the Upper Midwest later this week bringing some snow or rain to the Northland by Friday with high temperatures in the 30s to around 40.
Long Range Forecast - Confidence: Medium to High.
Below to near normal temperatures are expected as we close out the month of March already. Snow or rain chances on Saturday (26th) Otherwise its looking fairly quiet in our area during the long range. In fact I don't see any major snow or rain event that would affect the Northland through the end of March, of course that could easily change but right now it just looks like more nuisance type snow/rain events instead of a blockbuster storm.
