Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Date:  February 12, 2016

The final shot of arctic air (for now) has been pushing into the Northland today and wow this blast of cold air is very impressive! Late afternoon mesoanalysis shows -40 to -48C 500mb temperatures stretching from far Northeast Minnesota to Eastern Canada with 850mb temperatures of -30 to -36C in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec Provinces to -24 to -28C in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  500mb heights were as low as 492 meters near Hudson Bay Canada this afternoon, wow!  Sunny to partly cloudy in most of the Northland today with more clouds and some snow showers and flurries along the South Shore of Lake Superior.  Temperatures this afternoon ranged from the single digits below to single digits above zero with winds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

Short Term Forecast - Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 12)

Bitterly cold with dangerous wind chills! Clear to partly cloudy skies as strong high pressure builds over the Upper Midwest.  Low temperatures in the teens and 20s below zero with 30s below likely in the traditional cold spots.  Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

Saturday and Saturday night (February 13)

Arctic high pressure moves off to the east while low pressure and warm front push into the Northern Plains.  Sunny to partly cloudy for Saturday with highs in the single digits below to around 10 above zero.  Partly to mostly cloudy Saturday night with lows in the teens below to single digits above zero.  Northwest winds Saturday morning will gradually shift to the south or southeast at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast - Confidence:  Medium to High.

Sunday through Tuesday (February 14-16)

A chance for some light snow and flurries from time to time Sunday, Monday and Tuesday but not looking a lot of accumulation - Most locations only getting about an inch Sunday into Monday morning.

Warming up Sunday and Monday with highs in the teens on Sunday and in the 20s to lower 30s on Monday.  Highs on Tuesday will be in the teens and 20s.  Low temperatures Sunday night will be in the single digits and teens, lows Monday night in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast - Confidence:  Medium.

(February 17-22)

Near to below average temperatures on the 17th followed by near to above average temperatures from the 18th-22nd.  No major storms showing up that would affect Northeast Minnesota or Northwest Wisconsin during the long range, in fact it looks pretty quiet around here with only very minor snow or mixed precipitation events possible.
