Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Date:  February 10, 2016

Another cold day but we did have quite a bit of sunshine once again so that always makes it look and feel somewhat nicer.  Lingering snow showers and flurries along the South Shore of Lake Superior, dry elsewhere.  Highs were in the single digits to low teens with winds out of the north or northwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast - Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 10)

Clear to partly cloudy as high pressure remains over the Upper Midwest.  Low temperatures will be in the single digits, teens and 20s below zero with 30s below possible in the traditional cold spots.  Winds will be out of the north or northwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Thursday and Thursday night (February 11)

One area of high pressure pushes off to the southeast while a new and even stronger area of high pressure builds south/east out of Saskatchewan Province, in between these highs will be a cold front which is forecast to push south through the Northland Thursday night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies on tap for Thursday with highs in the single digits and teens, lows Thursday night will range from the single digits above zero in Northwest Wisconsin to the teens and 20s below over Northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the west at 10 to 20 mph shifting more to the northwest Thursday night.

Note:  Lake effect snow showers will persist tonight mainly over Iron County in Northwest Wisconsin.  Lake effect snow showers could increase in coverage and intensity on Friday into early Saturday over portions of Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties in Northwest Wisconsin as winds become north or northwest once again.

Extended Forecast - Confidence:  Medium to High.

Friday through Sunday (February 12-14)

Strong area of high pressure will be in control of our weather for Friday and Saturday as it moves southeast out of Saskatchewan Province - High temperatures on Friday and Saturday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero with lows Friday night in the teens, 20s and 30s below.  Low temperatures Saturday night will range from the teens below to single digits above zero.

Southerly winds develop later this weekend with warmer air pushing into the Upper Midwest, this setup should lead to some light snow in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin on Sunday with a chance for some lake effect snow Saturday night and Sunday along the North Shore of Lake Superior as winds shift to the south and southeast.  At this time snowfall totals don't look overly impressive on Sunday with generally minor/light snowfall amounts expected.  High temperatures on Sunday will be in the teens to around 20.

Long Range Forecast - Confidence:  Low to Medium.

(February 15-20)

Near to above average temperatures on the way during the long range with a couple systems possibly impacting the Northland with minor snow/precipitation events.
