Today's Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Partly to mostly sunny skies were found in our area Today with high temperatures generally in the single digits and teens with a few 20s in Northwest Wisconsin. Some light snow and flurries associated with an area of low pressure well to our southeast tapered off during the Morning while heavier lake effect snow showers affected Ashland and Iron Counties Wisconsin. Winds Today were out of the north or west at 5 to around 20 mph.
Today's Upper Level Analysis:
West to east 500mb flow covered the Upper Midwest per water vapor satellite imagery. A strong storm system was moving into Southeast Ontario Province while a disturbance heads east across the Northern Rockies. Powerhouse jet stream of 120-160+ knots was plowing into the Northwest U.S. This Evening per RUC model analysis. 850mb temperatures as of 7pm ranged from -12 degrees C in Southern Minnesota to -22 degrees C in Northwest Minnesota. Note: Even colder air with -26 to -32 degree C 850mb temperatures were found in Central and Western Canada per RUC model analysis.
Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Tonight (January 17th)
High pressure will pass through the region with clear to partly cloudy skies through Midnight with partly to mostly cloudy skies Overnight. Temperatures will bottom out in the teens and 20s below in Northern Minnesota with 10 below to single digits above zero for the rest of us. Calm to variable winds under 10 mph will become south or east after Midnight.
Wednesday and Wednesday Night (January 18th)
Low pressure will track from the Northern Plains to the Lake Superior/Upper Michigan border. Light snow and flurries will affect all of our area during this period. The snow will begin in Northern Minnesota between mid-Morning and early Afternoon with snow spreading farther south/east from mid-Afternoon into early Evening. The snow won't last more than a couple hours in any given location. Snow will end from west to east by Wednesday Night. Note: Southeast winds coming off Lake Superior will likely cause some enhanced snowfall on Wednesday from Silver Bay up to Lutsen, Grand Marais and Grand Portage. Then as winds swing around to the northwest late Wednesday Night the chance for some heavier lake effect snow showers will return to the South Shore of Lake Superior from Bayfield, Ashland to Iron Counties. Highs on Wednesday will range from the single digits in far Northern Minnesota with teens and 20s elsewhere. Lows Wednesday Night will be in the 20s below zero in Northern Minnesota with single digits and teens below elsewhere. Winds on Wednesday will be from the south or east at 10 to 20 mph. Winds will turn to the northwest at 10 to 25 mph for Wednesday Night.
Forecasted snowfall amounts for Wednesday and Wednesday Night:
2-4" in Northern Minnesota with the highest totals along the Minnesota-Ontario border. 1" or less south of Highway 2. The North Shore of Lake Superior from Silver Bay to Grand Portage...2-5" of snow is possible here. The South Shore of Lake Superior...Including Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties Wisconsin could see 2-5" of snow as well with the majority of the snow in this area occurring Wednesday Night and Thursday Morning.
Note: Dangerously cold wind chills will develop in our area Wednesday Night and Thursday. Wind chills from 20 to 40 below are forecasted to occur with wind chills as low as 45 below possible in Northern Minnesota. Frostbite times could occur in as little as 5 to 15 minutes in conditions like these.
Extended Forecast (January 19th-21st)
Coldest day of the entire winter could happen on Thursday as a strong push of arctic air pours into the Northland with 850mb temperatures of -24 to -30 degrees C. Most of our area will have high temperatures of 10 below to zero on Thursday with lows Thursday Night in the single digits, teens and 20s below zero...The coldest temperatures should be in Northern Minnesota. It looks dry on Thursday except along the South Shore of Lake Superior where some lake effect snow showers could continue. Low pressure will pass south of our area from Friday into early Saturday, this system looks like it could drop several inches of snow in the Southern half of Minnesota with light snow and flurries with minor accumulations possibly affecting locations south of Highway 2 in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Highs on Friday will be in the single digits and teens with lows Friday Night in the single digits and teens below zero with some 20s below possible in Northern Minnesota. Saturday at this time looks dry with highs in the single digits and teens.
Long Range Forecast (January 22nd-28th)
Could see another disturbance move through the area late this weekend with another minor snow event possible. Forecast becomes murky for next week with computer models changing quite a bit from one run to the next. Only thing that seems certain is that there will be no arctic air for next week, that should remain well to our northwest/north.
