Today's Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Low pressure of 992mb was centered in Eastern Michigan with high pressure of 1020-1022mb extending from North Dakota to Manitoba Province.  Several inches of wind driven snow occurred Today in Sawyer and Price Counties Wisconsin due to the low in Michigan.  N-NW winds and plenty of cold air rushing over the open waters of Lake Superior led to a heavy lake effect snow event Today in Iron County Wisconsin with significant snowfall amounts also occurring in portions of Ashland and Bayfield Counties.  The remainder of our area saw some flurries and light snow showers at times.  Skies were mostly cloudy Today with highs in the single digits and teens which is about 5-10 degrees below average.  North or northwest winds at 10 to 25 mph produced wind chills of 5 above to 20 below.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

A strong storm system was moving N/NE across the Ohio Valley while an upper level trough covered parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.  850mb temperatures as of 7pm were around -14 degrees C in Minnesota per RUC model analysis.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Tonight (January 12th)

Snow associated with the Michigan low will continue to affect portions of Sawyer and all of Price Counties Wisconsin, including the Cities of Park Falls, Phillips, Prentice, Ogema and Winter.  The snow should begin to taper off after 2-3am Friday.  Lake effect snow which will be heavy at times will persist through the night along the South Shore of Lake Superior with the greatest accumulations expected to be in Ashland and Iron Counties.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found in our area Tonight with scattered flurries/light snow showers elsewhere.  Lows will range from 10 above to 10 below with some 15 to 20 below readings possible in Northern Minnesota.  Winds will be out of the north or northwest at 10 to 25 mph.  Wind chills will range from zero to 25 below.

Note:
*Winter Storm Warning* remains in effect for Ashland and Iron Counties Wisconsin until 10am CST Friday.

*Lake Effect Snow Advisory* continues for Bayfield County Wisconsin until 10am CST Friday.

*Winter Weather Advisory* continues for Price County Wisconsin until 12am CST Tonight.

Total snowfall accumulations by Friday Morning:

3-6" for Price and Bayfield Counties Wisconsin.
6-12" in Ashland and Iron Counties with localized amounts up to 24" in Iron County.

Friday and Friday Night (January 13th)

Lake effect snow showers will continue along the South Shore of Lake Superior on Friday, but the intensity of the snow should start to diminish by the Afternoon.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecasted during this period with light snow and flurries moving into Western parts of our area by Friday Night as low pressure approaches from the northwest.  Highs on Friday will range from zero to around 15 above with lows Friday Night in the single digits below to around 10 above zero.  Winds will be out of the northwest on Friday and the south or west on Friday Night.  Wind speeds will vary between 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast (January 14th-16th)

Weak area of low pressure will drop S/SE through the Upper Midwest on Saturday.  Could see some snow showers and flurries with up to 1" of fluffy snow in parts of our area on Saturday.  Looks dry Saturday Night through Sunday Night, although some flurries can't be ruled out in Northern Minnesota during that period.  Low pressure will pass by to our north for Sunday and Monday while another low heads E-NE out of the Central Plains early next week.  A cold front will connect the two lows with that boundary moving southeast and through our local area on Monday.  Snow showers or flurries are possible in the Northland early next week, but no big accumulations are expected at this time.  High temperatures from Saturday through Monday will be in the teens and 20s with lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night in the single digits and teens.

Long Range Forecast (January 17th-23rd)

Brutally cold air with 850mb temperatures from -30 to -38 degrees C will cover Western-Central Canada most of next week with the southern flank of this arctic air possibly affecting parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest from mid to late next week.  The only thing that will keep the core of the coldest air to our north will be the jet stream which is expected to go from west to east, but any buckle in the jet stream would result in the core of the arctic air pushing into our area some time next week.  A couple of low pressure systems should move along the intensifying baroclinic zone and if these lows move far enough north, then we could be dealing with some snow events during this forecast period.
