Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Today's Weather:

High pressure of 1028 mb was centered near St. Louis, Missouri This Afternoon while a cold front was moving east into the Central Dakotas.  A southerly wind continued Today on the backside of the high and out ahead of the cold front, this combined with ample amounts of sunshine led to a day with much above normal temperatures except for areas near Lake Superior.  High temperatures Today were generally in the lower to middle 70s which is 10-20 degrees warmer than normal for the 5th of October...Cooler 50s and 60s were common from Superior and Downtown Duluth up along the North Shore of Lake Superior.  Dewpoints have come up a bit Today compared to the past few days with values generally in the 40s across our area This Afternoon with PWS still on the low side, generally around 1/2" or less.  Winds Today were out of the south at 10-20 mph with some higher gusts.

Today's Upper Level Analysis:

Cutoff lows were located over West Virgina and Southern California Today per water vapor satellite imagery and RUC model analysis with upper level troughs across portions of the Western U.S. and the Eastern U.S. while an upper level ridge prevailed in parts of the Plains.

Tonight through Wednesday Night:

A cold front will move east, passing through Northern-Eastern Minnesota late Tonight and through Northwest Wisconsin Wednesday Morning.  Most of the showers associated with this system will stay north of the border, but a few rain showers could develop late Tonight and early Tomorrow Morning north of a line from Margie to Grand Marais.  High pressure will then build back into the Upper Midwest behind this cold front for Wednesday and Wednesday Night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies Tonight and Tomorrow Morning will clear out Tomorrow Afternoon with mainly clear skies on tap for Wednesday Night.  Lows Tonight will be in the 40s to lower 50s with highs Tomorrow in the 50s and 60s, cooler compared to Today thanks to some cold advection (850 mb temps dropping from around +14 degrees This Evening to around +6 degrees C on Wednesday)  Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the 30s and 40s.  Southerly winds will turn north/west late Tonight and Tomorrow with west/northwest winds Tomorrow Night.  Wind speeds will range from 10-20 mph, but some higher gusts are possible early Tonight and again on Wednesday.

Extended Forecast:

High pressure will be in control of our weather for Thursday and Friday with above normal temperatures...Highs will reach the 60s and 70s both days, although it could turn cooler near Lake Superior on Friday as winds may veer to an easterly direction.  Low temperatures will mainly be in the 40s both Thursday and Friday Night.  This weekend and early next week may see a bit of a pattern change as the cutoff low currently over SoCal starts to open up while lifting northeast...This feature could bring a few showers/thunderstorms to parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest from Saturday into Monday, but exact details concerning the timing and track of this low are quite uncertain at this time.
